Bei der Verwendung als Ölablassbehälter benötigt der HDB3 keine Isolierung, da der Wärmeeintrag der Umgebung genutzt wird, um das restliche Kältemittel aus dem Kältemittelöl auszudampfen. Sollte die Umgebungstemperatur nicht ausreichen, kann ein elektrischer Heizstab über die vorhandene Tauchhülse montiert werden. Die Handentölung erfolgt über ein Serviceventil in Kombination mit einem sog. Totmannventil (WITT SSV6). Bei der Verwendung als Ölverteilbehälter kann der HDB3 in einer automatischen Ölrückführung in Kombination mit einer Ölrückführeinheit (BDP) zur vereinfachten Verteilung des zurückgeführten Kältemaschinenöls auf mehrere Verdichter eingesetzt werden.
